  Leptomeningeal metastases are defined as the spread of the disease to the meninges surrounding the brain and the spinal cord and a rare but frequently devastating complication of advanced cancer. When cancer cells are found in your leptomeninges or CSF, this is called leptomeningeal metastases (LM). LM stick onto nerves as they exit your brain and spinal cord, causing weakness and numbness. LM can also clog your leptomeninges and prevent CSF from being drained properly, causing CSF and pressure to build up inside of your brain. LC is diagnosed in approximately 5% of patients with advanced cancer. However, in autopsy studies, it can be detected in up to 20% of cases.
