  Traveler's diarrhea (TD) is defined as three unformed stools in 24 hours accompanied by at least one of the following symptoms in a traveler from a developed country visiting a less developed country: fever, nausea, vomiting, cramps, tenesmus, or bloody stools (dysentery). Generally, it is a mild self-limiting illness that lasts 3 to 5 days (mean 3.6 days). TD is a clinical syndrome caused by various intestinal pathogens. Bacterial pathogens are the most common threat, accounting for 80%–90% of TD. Intestinal viruses typically cause at least 5%–8% of illnesses, though improved diagnostics may increase recognition of norovirus infections. Infections with protozoal pathogens are more challenging to detect and account for about 10% of diagnoses in long-term travelers. Traveler's diarrhea is typically diagnosed by reviewing the patient's medical history and performing a physical examination. If diarrhea persists, a stool sample may be required for testing.
