Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, is a malignancy that originates from the stomach lining. It is slow-growing cancer and is considered a multifactorial disease. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) as a human carcinogen due to the evidence linking H. pylori infection and an increased risk of gastric cancer. The mechanism by which H. pylori acts as a carcinogen is believed to be indirect, through the induction of gastritis, which can lead to the development of precancerous conditions such as gastric atrophy, metaplasia, and dysplasia. Individuals with certain genetic disorders, such as hereditary diffuse gastric cancer, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, and familial adenomatous polyposis, are more likely to develop stomach cancer.
