Severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is characterized by pneumonia that necessitates supportive therapy in a critical care setting and is associated with a higher mortality rate. Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus), Haemophilus influenzae, and Staphylococcus aureus are frequent bacterial pathogens responsible for causing severe CAP. These bacteria can invade the lungs either through inhalation of respiratory droplets containing the bacteria or by spreading from an infection in another part of the body.
