 Biliary tract cancer is a rare and diverse malignant neoplasm originating from epithelial cells within the biliary duct. It presents with varied histologic and biochemical features. Malignant transformation can arise along any segment of the bile duct epithelium, from the terminal ductules (canals of Hering) to the ampulla of Vater and within the peribiliary glands. The etiology of this abnormal proliferation leading to tumor formation remains elusive, with most cases occurring sporadically. Predominantly adenocarcinomas, biliary tract cancers exhibit varying degrees of differentiation, primarily presenting as well-differentiated adenocarcinomas, though uncommon variants like adenosquamous, squamous, mucinous, and anaplastic carcinomas are also observed. The primary curative approach entails radical surgery with negative margins; however, early-stage disease often manifests asymptomatically.
