 Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a sensorineural hearing loss of 30 decibels or greater over at least three contiguous audiometric frequencies within 72 hours. Most SSNHL cases do not have an identified cause and are classified as idiopathic. Most SSNHL cases have an unknown etiology and are classified as idiopathic. At the same time, the differential diagnosis includes over a hundred potential etiologies, with the most frequent causes being infectious, otologic, traumatic, vascular or hematologic, neoplastic and others. In the United States, the two most common bacterial infections known to cause SSNHL are Lyme disease and syphilis. Chronic manifestations of Lyme disease, including systemic neurologic involvement and asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss, can occur within the first year of infection.
