  Keloids, resulting from abnormal wound healing triggered by skin trauma or inflammation, are influenced by genetic and environmental factors. They are more prevalent among individuals of African, Asian, and Hispanic descent. Overactive fibroblasts, producing excessive collagen and growth factors, are implicated in their pathogenesis, leading to the characteristic histologic findings of keloidal collagen bundles and numerous fibroblasts. Clinically, keloids manifest as firm, rubbery nodules extending beyond the initial injury site, often accompanied by pain, itching, or burning. The differential diagnosis includes hypertrophic scars, which are smaller and confined to the injury area, and dermatofibroma, characterized by flesh-colored or hyperpigmented papules or nodules.
