Osteomyelitis – Market Outlook, Epidemiology, Competitive Landscape, and Market Forecast Report – 2022 To 2032

Osteomyelitis is a serious infection of the bone that can present in several significant syndromes, including hematogenous osteomyelitis, vertebral osteomyelitis, osteomyelitis after trauma, and diabetic foot infection. The bone is generally resistant to infection but may become susceptible due to trauma, ischemia, or foreign bodies, which expose bone sites to which microorganisms can bind. Certain bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, adhere to the bone by expressing receptors for components of the bone matrix, including laminin, fibronectin, collagen, and bone sialoglycoprotein. These bacteria can also form a protective biofilm coating around themselves and underlying surfaces, leading to resistance to antibiotic therapy and the persistence of bone infections. The clinical presentation of osteomyelitis varies depending on the etiology. Hematogenous osteomyelitis typically presents with the subacute or chronic onset of pain at bony involvement. In contrast, infections associated with vascular insufficiency often present with ulceration, erythema, swelling, and drainage that may progress to the visible bone. Vertebral osteomyelitis typically presents with subacute to chronic pain at the involved site, sometimes with fever, and can also result in cord compression and compromise. Differential diagnosis includes various conditions, such as Charcot arthropathy, SAPHO syndrome, arthritis, metastatic bone disease, fractures, gout, avascular necrosis of the bone, bursitis, and sickle cell vaso-occlusive pain crises.

·       In the USA and Europe, the prevalence of Osteomyelitis ranges from 7 to 15 cases per 100,000 population, and males are often more affected than women between the age of 60 and older.
