Molluscum Contagiosum Overview

Molluscum contagiosum, also called water warts, is a harmless skin condition characterized by benign growths. These growths on the skin are termed mollusca. The typical appearance of these growths is round, dome-shaped, and displays a pinkish-purple hue. The cause of molluscum contagiosum is a double-stranded DNA poxvirus known as molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV). There are four identified subtypes of this virus. MCV-1, found in about 98% of cases, is predominantly observed in children, whereas MCV-2 primarily affects individuals with HIV and leads to skin lesions. MCV-3 and MCV-4 are prevalent in Asia and Australia. Currently, it is not possible to have cultures of molluscum contagiosum virus. The incubation period for this condition spans from two weeks to six months. Molluscum contagiosum virus targets only keratinocytes, and the resulting skin growths are confined to the epidermis without systemic dissemination. This virus generates proteins that hinder the human antiviral immune response, effectively impeding the development of innate immunity. This contributes to the persistence of the skin lesions. There is no perfect treatment for Molluscum contagiosum since we cannot kill the virus. In many cases, no specific treatment is necessary.
