Blepharitis
Overview
Blepharitis
is a common condition characterized by a chronic inflammatory process of the
lid margins and is often caused by dysfunction of the oil glands of the lids
and/or secondary to other skin disorders like seborrheic dermatitis and
rosacea. It presents with burning sensations and itchiness of the lids and eye
irritation due to crust formation around the lid margins and grittiness or
irritation of the eyes. It may be anterior or posterior and can also be
secondary to other lid and eye disorders like styes and dry eye syndrome. It is
diagnosed based on clinical examination of the lid and eye surface. Treatment
of blepharitis involves long-term lid care measures like hot compress and lid
cleaning. It also requires antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drug therapy.
Blepharitis is not sight-threatening; however, it is a troublesome condition
due to its long-term and recurrent nature.
