Primary
Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) Overview
Primary
Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic liver condition characterized by the
inflammation and progressive fibrosis of the bile ducts, leading to the
formation of strictures (narrowing). This disease is strongly associated with
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), with the majority of PSC patients having
underlying IBD, most commonly ulcerative colitis (about 85% of cases), with
Crohn’s disease being less frequent. Anatomically, strictures usually affect
both the intrahepatic (inside the liver) and extrahepatic (outside the liver)
bile ducts in over 80% of patients. Importantly, most individuals with PSC are
asymptomatic when diagnosed, typically identified incidentally through abnormal
liver function tests found during routine blood work, and can remain
symptom-free for long periods despite disease progression.
