Venous Thromboembolism Overview

Venous thromboembolism is a blood clot (a thrombus) in the veins related to two conditions (1) deep vein thrombosis is a clot in a deep vein in the lower leg, thigh, or pelvis, and (2) pulmonary embolism occurs when deep vein thrombosis clot break free from a vein wall, travels to the lungs and block the blood supply. Venous thromboembolism is most likely to occur after major surgery, injury, cancer, heart attack, or heart failure. Redness, swelling, and pain are common symptoms of deep vein thrombosis, whereas pulmonary embolism can include sudden chest pain and shortness of breath. Thrombus formation and propagation depend on abnormalities in blood clotting components, blood vessel wall, and blood flow, known as Virchow’s triad. Venous obstruction can result from either external compression by enlarged lymph nodes, bulky tumors, or intravascular compression by the previous thrombosis. Estrogen at the pharmacological level and cancer can also activate the clotting factor.
