Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL) treatment modalities options for eight major
markets (USA, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, UK, Japan, and China).
Sudden
Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL) Overview
Sudden
sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a sensorineural hearing loss of 30
decibels or greater over at least three contiguous audiometric frequencies
within 72 hours. Most SSNHL cases do not have an identified cause and are
classified as idiopathic. Most SSNHL cases have an unknown etiology and are
classified as idiopathic. At the same time, the differential diagnosis includes
over a hundred potential etiologies, with the most frequent causes being
infectious, otologic, traumatic, vascular or hematologic, neoplastic and
others. In the United States, the two most common bacterial infections known to
cause SSNHL are Lyme disease and syphilis. Chronic manifestations of Lyme
disease, including systemic neurologic involvement and asymmetric sensorineural
hearing loss, can occur within the first year of infection. An expanding
erythematous rash, erythema migrans, is one of Lyme disease’s most
characteristic early manifestations. SSNHL may also be a manifestation of
various systemic autoimmune disorders and thyroid disorders. Many autoimmune
diseases, including Cogan’s syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, temporal
arteritis, and Wegener’s granulomatosis, have been associated with sudden
hearing loss.
