and key market insights under the potential Sturge-Weber Syndrome (SWS) treatment modalities options for eight major
markets (USA, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, UK, Japan, and China).
Sturge-Weber
Syndrome (SWS) Overview
Sturge-Weber
syndrome (SWS), also known as encephalotrigeminal angiomatosis, is a
neurocutaneous syndrome characterized by angiomas affecting the face, choroid,
and leptomeninges. The facial capillary vascular malformation, often called
“port-wine stain” or “nevus flammeus,” typically manifests in the trigeminal
nerve distribution. This sporadic developmental disorder results from somatic
mosaic mutations in the GNAQ gene on chromosome 9’s long arm. The
facial nevus comprises numerous thin-walled vessels resembling capillaries,
while neuropathological examination reveals angiomas primarily within the pia
mater, consisting of multiple capillaries and small venous channels. Notably,
there is a relative scarcity of superficial cortical veins, with blood redirected
to the deep venous system by enlarged medullary veins, leading to stasis and
ischemic changes. Regarding treatment, there is no specific remedy
for Sturge-Weber syndrome; the focus lies on minimizing seizure activity using
anticonvulsive medications. In cases where medical management fails to control
refractory seizures, surgical intervention such as hemispherectomy or focal
resection of the seizure focus may be considered. The precise incidence
and prevalence of Sturge-Weber syndrome remain uncertain.
