Osteochondromas Market Outlook
Thelansis’s “Osteochondromas Market
Outlook, Epidemiology, Competitive Landscape, and Market Forecast Report – 2024
To 2034" covers disease overview, epidemiology, drug utilization,
prescription share analysis, competitive landscape, clinical practice,
regulatory landscape, patient share, market uptake, market forecast, and key
market insights under the potential Osteochondromas treatment modalities
options for eight major markets (USA, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, UK, Japan,
and China).
Osteochondromas Overview
Osteochondroma
can manifest as a singular abnormal growth or as part of multiple
osteochondromas in individuals with multiple hereditary exostoses (HME). Its
symptoms include a painless protrusion near the joints, pain experienced during
physical activity, sensations of numbness or tingling, and alterations in blood
flow. Solitary osteochondromas can be categorized into primary and secondary
forms based on their causes. Primary osteochondromas develop spontaneously
without any identifiable triggering event. In contrast, secondary
osteochondromas can arise from childhood exposure to radiation or trauma (such
as surgery or Salter-Harris fractures). The prevalence of post-radiation
osteochondromas ranges from 6% to 24%, making them the most common benign tumors
induced by radiation. The period between radiation exposure and the development
of osteochondromas can range from 3 to 17 years. In patients with HME, surgical
intervention is more frequently required due to an increased risk of malignant
transformation and more severe deformities in the bone structure. Surgical
procedures may be performed to correct or improve associated bone deformities.
On average, patients with HME undergo 2.7 surgical procedures. When diagnosing
osteochondroma, it is necessary to consider both benign and malignant growths
as potential differential diagnoses. These may include Subungual Exostosis,
Dysplasia Epiphysealis Hemimelica, Turret Exostosis, Bizarre Parosteal
Osteochondromatous Proliferation, Parosteal Osteosarcoma, Juxtacortical
Chondroma, Subperiosteal Hematoma. The prognosis for the solitary form of
osteochondroma is generally favorable, with malignant transformation occurring
in only 1% of patients. The majority of solitary lesions are small and do not
cause symptoms. Potential complications can include fractures, compression of
nearby nerves and blood vessels, and the formation of bursae. Symptomatic
lesions can be treated through surgical excision, although this procedure
carries risks of recurrence, nerve and blood vessel injuries, and compartment
syndrome. The complications associated with osteochondroma can range from minor
cosmetic concerns to severe neurological complications and malignant
transformation.
