Oculocutaneous Albinism (OCA) Overview

Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a group of disorders in which melanin biosynthesis is disrupted, resulting in no or reduced pigmentation in the hair, skin, and eyes. These diseases are inherited in an autosomal recessive or X-linked manner. Patients with OCA have decreased acuity due to foveal hypoplasia. The other findings are Nystagmus, strabismus, reduced stereopsis, and a high refractive error. Patients with normal contrast sensitivity and full visual fields are typical. In this case study, an OCA patient is discussed and the cultural implications of albinism on the African continent. The four main types of OCA are autosomal recessive. Diagnosis is made based on the presence of typical cutaneous and ocular findings. Distinguishing between subtypes based on clinical features can be difficult due to overlap in clinical phenotypes. Due to reduced or absent melanin, people with albinism are highly susceptible to the harmful effects of UV radiation and are at a higher risk for actinic injury.
