Overview
Meconium
aspiration syndrome (MAS) refers to respiratory distress observed in newborns
when meconium-stained amniotic fluid (MSAF) is present. The symptoms of
meconium aspiration can vary among infants. However, the following are commonly

impairs surfactant function. These mechanisms contribute to the development of
respiratory distress in the newborn. The exact pathophysiology of MAS is not
fully understood, but five important processes have been identified: meconium
passage, aspiration, airway obstruction, inflammation, and surfactant
