Helicobacter
Pylori Infections Overview
Helicobacter
pylori (H. pylori) is a microaerophilic, flagellated, Gram-negative bacterium
with a helix-shaped morphology. It can transform from a spiral to a coccoid
shape, believed to aid its survival in the gastric environment of the host. H.
pylori is implicated in causing acute gastritis, characterized by infiltrating
neutrophils into the foveolar and surface epithelium, along with degenerative
changes. In the majority of infected individuals, H. pylori establishes a
persistent infection. Prolonged H. pylori infection leads to chronic gastritis,
presenting as various pathological conditions. This form of gastritis
associated with H. pylori can be categorized into distinct clinical phenotypes.
Most H. pylori-infected individuals develop nonatrophic pangastritis, which
does not predispose them to peptic ulcers or gastric atrophy. The development
of gastroduodenal diseases appears to be influenced by bacterial and host
factors.
