Ehlers-Danlos
Syndrome Overview
Ehlers-Danlos
syndrome (EDS) encompasses a spectrum of connective tissue disorders
distinguished by unstable, hypermobile joints, lax and resilient skin, and
tissue vulnerability. Its etiology stems from a deficiency in connective tissue
integrity, predominantly attributed to mutations within the collagen gene.
Vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS) follows an autosomal dominant
inheritance pattern, with the COL3A1 gene mutation being the primary culprit.
Approximately half of vEDS cases inherit the mutation from an affected parent,
while the remainder arise from spontaneous mutations. Offspring of affected
individuals have a 50 percent likelihood of inheriting the mutation and
manifesting the disorder.
