Down
Syndrome Overview
Down
Syndrome is a chromosomal disease characterized by intellectual disability, a
distinctive facial appearance, and low muscle tone (hypotonia) in infancy.
Although all affected people experience cognitive delays, the intellectual
disability is usually mild to moderate. People with DS may have a variety of
congenital disabilities. A heart defect affects approximately half of all
affected children. Digestive abnormalities, such as intestine blockage, are
less common. Individuals with DS are at a higher risk of developing various
medical conditions. These include gastroesophageal reflux, a backflow of acidic
stomach contents into the esophagus, and celiac disease, a gluten intolerance.
Trisomy 21 (nondisjunction) is the most ordinary type of Down syndrome,
accounting for 95 percent of cases. Babies are typically born with 23
chromosome pairs (or 46 total chromosomes) in each cell, one inherited from the
mother and father. In Trisomy 21, an error in cell division is called
“nondisjunction” this results in a baby being born with an additional copy of
chromosome 21, meaning there are three copies of chromosome 21 instead of the
usual two.
