Cellulitis Overview
Cellulitis
is a prevalent bacterial infection of the skin. The skin acts as a protective
barrier, preventing the entry of normal skin flora and other microorganisms

tissue, causing an acute superficial infection known as cellulitis. The primary

for bilateral stasis dermatitis. Various factors can increase the risk of
cellulitis by compromising the integrity of the skin barrier, such as skin
injuries, surgical incisions, intravenous site punctures, fissures between the
toes, insect bites, animal bites, and other skin infections. Individuals with
certain comorbidities, including diabetes mellitus, venous insufficiency,
peripheral arterial disease, and lymphedema, are at a higher risk of developing
cellulitis. The characteristic symptoms of cellulitis include redness
(erythema), warmth, swelling (edema), and tenderness upon touch, resulting from
the immune response triggered by bacteria penetrating the epidermis.
Streptococci, the predominant bacteria causing cellulitis, can also produce
virulence factors like pyrogenic exotoxins (A, B, C, and F) and streptococcal
superantigens, contributing to more severe and invasive diseases. It is frequently
encountered and primarily affects the deep dermis and subcutaneous tissue, with
a predilection for the lower extremities. However, it can resemble other
conditions. Erysipelas is sometimes considered a variant of cellulitis. Early
identification of cellulitis by clinicians and prompt initiation of appropriate
antibiotic treatment can lead to 0a noticeable improvement in signs and
symptoms within 48 hours. Failure to promptly diagnose and treat cellulitis can
result in complications, including bacteremia if the bacterial infection
