Patients who undergo surgical repair have a 90% survival rate for around 15 years, although approximately 9% to 10% of them may require reoperation within that period. Most complications related to AVSD are linked to intracardiac shunting and atrioventricular valve regurgitation. Complete AVSD leads to right-sided heart overload, heart failure, and pulmonary congestion at a young age, contributing to a significant infant mortality rate. This shunt can lead to irreversible pulmonary vascular disease, pulmonary hypertension, and Eisenmenger syndrome without correction.
