and key market insights under the potential Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)
treatment modalities options for eight major markets (USA, Germany, France,
Italy, Spain, UK, Japan, and China).
Abdominal
Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Overview
An
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is characterized by the enlargement of the
lower segment of the aorta, the body’s primary blood supply vessel, which
extends from the heart through the chest and abdomen. Several factors
contribute to the formation of AAA, including inflammation weakening the aortic
artery wall, advanced age (50+ for men, 60+ for women), a history of
atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, heart or peripheral
vascular disease, and tobacco use. Those at the highest risk are men older than
60, smokers, Caucasians, and individuals with a first-generation relative who
has had an AAA. Additional potential factors associated with AAA development
include tears in the arterial wall, infections, and congenital connective
tissue disorders. The diagnosis of an abdominal aortic aneurysm typically
involves the use of ultrasound. However, a CT scan is required to determine its
precise location, size, and impact on surrounding blood vessels, especially in
symptomatic patients. The differential diagnosis for AAA includes Mesenteric
ischemia, Peptic ulcer disease, Diverticulitis, Pyelonephritis, and Myocardial
infarction. Treatment is recommended when the aneurysm diameter reaches 5 to
5.5 cm, shows rapid enlargement of more than 0.5 cm over six months, or becomes
symptomatic. Open surgical repair via transabdominal or retroperitoneal
approach has been the gold standard. The prognosis for AAA is grim, with an
approximately 80% risk of death following a rupture. Most patients do not survive
long enough to reach the hospital, and even with surgical intervention, the
success rate for repairing a ruptured aneurysm is only 50%.
