Autoimmune
Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA) Overview
Autoimmune
hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a rare but severe autoimmune disorder characterized
by the premature destruction of red blood cells (RBCs) by the body’s immune
system. From a life science perspective, the pathogenesis involves the
production of autoantibodies, typically IgG or IgM, that bind to antigens on
the surface of RBCs. This opsonization tags the cells for destruction,
primarily by macrophages in the spleen (extravascular hemolysis) or, less
commonly, directly within the bloodstream via complement activation
(intravascular hemolysis). AIHA is clinically subcategorized into “warm” and
“cold” types based on the thermal amplitude at which these autoantibodies are
most reactive. The resultant hemolysis leads to anemia, often presenting with
symptoms such as fatigue, pallor, and jaundice, and can be primary (idiopathic)
or secondary to underlying conditions like lymphomas, chronic lymphocytic
leukemia (CLL), or other autoimmune diseases.
