Advanced or Metastatic Medullary
Thyroid Cancer (MTC) Overview
Advanced
or Metastatic Medullary Thyroid Cancer (MTC) represents a more aggressive stage
of this rare neuroendocrine tumor, where the cancer has spread beyond the
thyroid gland to distant parts of the body, commonly including lymph nodes,
lungs, liver, bones, and sometimes the brain. MTC originates from the
parafollicular C cells of the thyroid, which produce calcitonin, and elevated
levels of calcitonin and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in the blood serve as
important tumor markers for diagnosis and monitoring. While initial symptoms
may include a neck lump, hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing, advanced or
metastatic disease can present with systemic symptoms such as severe diarrhea
and facial flushing due to high calcitonin levels, or pain and dysfunction
related to the sites of metastasis (e.g., bone pain, shortness of breath from
lung involvement). Unlike other types of thyroid cancer, MTC does not typically
respond to radioactive iodine therapy.
