Restless
Legs Syndrome (RLS) Overview
Restless
legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological condition that causes an uncomfortable or
unpleasant sensation in the legs and an irresistible urge to move them. It is
also known as Willis-Ekbom disease. The symptoms typically begin in the late
afternoon or evening and worsen at night, often interfering with sleep. This
can make falling asleep or returning to sleep after waking up challenging.
Walking or moving the legs usually provides temporary relief, but the
sensations often return once the movement stops. Because the symptoms of RLS
are triggered by resting and attempting to sleep, it is classified as both a
movement disorder and a sleep disorder. Although RLS affects both sexes, it is
more common in females. The majority of severely affected individuals are
middle-aged or older, and symptoms generally become worse and occur more
frequently with age.
