China).
Hydrocephalus
Overview
Hydrocephalus
is cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) buildup in the brain ventricles. This buildup
could be due to a blockage in the CSF’s flow, issues with absorption, or an
overproduction of CSF. If untreated, it can lead to mortality, physical and
mental impairment, and irreversible brain damage. The priority is treating the
cause. Surgery may alleviate hydrocephalus. Persistent hydrocephalus is treated
with ventricular shunt implantation. The shunt transfers CSF to another part of
the body for absorption. Many people lead healthy lives with few restrictions
after treatment. The most common type of shunt is the ventriculoperitoneal (VP)
shunt, which transfers CSF from the lateral ventricle to the peritoneal cavity.
The ventriculoatrial (VA) shunt is another common type, which shunts CSF into
the right atrium. It is mainly used in patients with severe obesity,
peritonitis, or post-abdominal surgery. A venous pleural shunt is a last
resort, and a lumboperitoneal shunt is considered in patients with pseudotumor
cerebri.
