Allergic Conjunctivitis – Market Outlook, Epidemiology, Competitive Landscape, and Market Forecast Report – 2023 To 2033

Allergic conjunctivitis, one of the most prevalent types, manifests with symptoms like redness, itching, watery eyes, and a gritty sensation. Typically, this condition arises when an individual's eyes encounter an allergen, prompting an exaggerated immune response. The discomfort stems from the heightened immune reaction, which involves the release of histamine and other active substances from mast cells, leading to inflammation. This inflammation irritates nerve endings, dilates blood vessels, and prompts increased tear production, irritating the eyes. Unlike other conditions, allergic conjunctivitis doesn't typically involve pain or sensitivity to light. It's exclusively linked to type I allergic reactions, where allergens interact with immunoglobulin E (IgE) bound to sensitized mast cells, triggering eye allergy symptoms. In sensitized individuals, T2 cells release pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-3, IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13, stimulating B cells to produce IgE. IgE then binds to mast cell membranes and triggers mast cell degranulation when cross-linked by allergens. This releases preformed substances such as histamine and tryptase and newly formed mediators like leukotrienes and prostaglandins. Dexamethasone ophthalmic insert (Dextenza®) 0.4 mg, for intracanalicular use, is prescribed to alleviate ocular itching linked to allergic conjunctivitis.

  • The prevalence of allergic conjunctivitis in the US population ranges between 32 million and 35 million individuals.
