Metastases are most commonly found in the liver and because few patients are candidates for potentially curative surgery associated with a poor prognosis. Uveal melanoma has a high tendency to metastasize, resulting in a high mortality rate. The most common sites of metastasis include the liver (89%), lung (29%), and bone (17%). In adults, UM is the most common primary intraocular malignancy, accounting for 3%–5% of all melanomas. UM is most commonly caused by choroidal melanocytes (85%-90%), but it can also be caused by the iris (3%-5%) and the ciliary body (5%-8%).
