Vitamin A Deficiency – Market Outlook, Epidemiology, Competitive Landscape, and Market Forecast Report – 2023 To 2033

Vitamin A is a lipid-soluble micronutrient that plays a vital role in cellular development, metabolism, immune function, vision, and reproductive processes. Insufficient intake or absorption of vitamin A can lead to a deficiency, impairing important physiological functions. Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is a widespread health concern affecting young children and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. According to the Institute of Medicine, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of vitamin A for healthy adults is 700 micrograms/day for women and 900 micrograms/day for men. Children, pregnant women, and lactating women have different RDAs, which are 300 to 900, 770, and 1300 micrograms/day, respectively. Ocular symptoms related to vitamin A deficiency have been observed to occur when blood concentrations are lower than 10 micrograms/dL. Inadequate nutrition compounded by chronic inflammation resulting from regular gastrointestinal (GI) infections is the primary cause of vitamin A deficiency. This situation often leads to multiple micronutrient deficiencies. Vitamin A is crucial for regenerating visual pigments, maintaining mucosal membranes, and proper immune function. Insufficient vitamin A levels can cause night blindness due to impaired regeneration of visual pigments in retinal rods. If the deficiency persists, the retinal rods will degenerate, leading to a condition called xerophthalmia, which can result in permanent blindness. Insufficient vitamin A also leads to dryness and breakdown of the mucosal membranes in the intestines and lungs, along with compromised immune function, resulting in frequent infections and anemia caused by chronic inflammation. The recommended treatment for vitamin A deficiency is vitamin A supplementation. The prognosis of vitamin A deficiency depends on the severity of the disease when treatment is initiated. Severe vitamin A deficiency may lead to irreversible vision loss or blindness, heightened susceptibility to infections, and impaired immune function, significantly increasing mortality rates.

  • In the USA, vitamin A deficiency is rare and estimated to affect only 0.3% of individuals. Conversely, the prevalence of vitamin A toxicity in the US is much higher than that of deficiency.
