Gout – Market Outlook, Epidemiology, Competitive Landscape, and Market Forecast Report – 2023 To 2033

Gout is a prevalent cause of chronic inflammatory arthritis, characterized by the deposition of monosodium urate (MSU) monohydrate crystals within tissues. Biochemically, gout is associated with extracellular fluid urate saturation, typically manifesting as hyperuricemia, where plasma or serum urate concentrations exceed 6.8 mg/dL (approximately 400 µmol/L), the threshold of urate solubility. Clinically, gout presents with various manifestations, including acute gout flares (recurrent episodes of inflammatory arthritis), chronic gouty arthropathy, tophaceous deposits due to urate crystal accumulation, uric acid nephrolithiasis, and chronic nephropathy. The etiology of gout is multifactorial, often involving genetic predisposition, medical comorbidities, and dietary factors. In rare instances, a single genetic mutation may lead to gout, typically in conjunction with other medical complications. Regardless of the initial trigger, elevated serum uric acid levels are an expected outcome, potentially resulting in clinical gout in susceptible individuals. Dietary modifications have been shown to influence serum uric acid levels and reduce the risk of gout. Higher consumption of meat and seafood is associated with an increased incidence of gout, while increased intake of dairy products is linked to a decreased incidence in men. Additionally, adherence to the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet has been shown to lower serum uric acid levels and reduce the risk of gout. Gout is also associated with several comorbid health conditions, including obesity, hypertension (HTN), chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetes mellitus (DM), hyperlipidemia (HLD), and metabolic syndrome. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are most effective when initiated within 48 hours of gout symptom onset, with indomethacin and naproxen being particularly potent options. Glucocorticoids are recommended for patients with contraindications to NSAIDs and colchicine and are preferred in those with renal insufficiency.
