Sialorrhea – Market Outlook, Epidemiology, Competitive Landscape, and Market Forecast Report – 2023 To 2033

Sialorrhea, also termed ptyalis or drooling, is an incapacitating phenomenon characterized by an excess accumulation of saliva in the oral cavity extending beyond the labial boundary. While drooling is common in typically developing infants, its prevalence diminishes between 15 to 36 months of age with the establishment of salivary control. Post the age of 4; this condition is regarded as abnormal. Pathological sialorrhea may arise as an isolated event due to heightened salivary secretion or may manifest concomitantly with various neurological conditions like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson's disease (PD), cerebral palsy (CP), or as an adverse effect of medications. In the pediatric population, CP is the leading cause of sialorrhea, persisting in 10%–38% of affected individuals. Conversely, PD is the predominant etiological factor in adults, accounting for sialorrhea in 70%–80% of PD patients. Notably, using clozapine in schizophrenic patients results in hypersalivation in 30%–80% of cases. Irrespective of the causative factor, drooling gives rise to clinical and functional complications, including impaired social functioning due to feelings of embarrassment and isolation, the potential for aspiration, skin integrity compromise, unpleasant odor, and susceptibility to infections. The principal salivary glands, encompassing the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands, play a vital role in the human body. Among these, the parotid gland is the largest. Saliva, secreted by these glands, is critical in lubrication, digestion, immune function, and overall homeostasis. In the unstimulated state, the submandibular and sublingual glands contribute 70% of total saliva production. Sialorrhea may emanate from augmented salivary generation due to idiopathic or drug-induced factors or mechanisms impeding the effective clearance of saliva from the oral cavity. Neurological disorders are often linked to sialorrhea, primarily stemming from compromised swallowing due to impaired neuromuscular coordination. This intricate coordination involves the harmonious interplay of structures encompassing the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and esophagus. In pediatric neurologic disorders, drooling appears to be more attributed to inefficiencies in tongue and bulbar control rather than an escalation in salivary secretion. Conservative therapeutic approaches entail modifications in dietary patterns or behaviors, oral-motor exercises, utilization of intra-oral devices like palatal training apparatuses, and medical interventions such as pharmacotherapy or botulinum toxin injections. Behavior modification strategies have been recommended for an extended period, although outcomes have demonstrated variability and necessitate a substantial time commitment. Invasive measures encompass surgical interventions or radiation therapy.
