Neonatal Seizures – Market Outlook, Epidemiology, Competitive Landscape, and Market Forecast Report – 2023 To 2033
Neonatal Seizures represent the most distinctive frequent manifestations of neurological dysfunction in the neonatal period. Neonatal seizures are clinically described as abnormal, stereotyped and paroxysmal dysfunctions in the central nervous system (CNS) occurring within the first 28 days after birth in full-term infants or before 44 weeks of gestational age in preterm infants. It is a relatively common occurrence in neonates with a heterogeneous etiology, and most infants are acutely symptomatic. The etiologies are different in term and preterm infants. Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), stroke, cerebral malformations and metabolic disorders are major causes of seizures in term infants. Some significant causes in preterm infants are intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH), periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) and infections. Neonatal seizures are often the first clinical sign of underlying neurological dysfunction, with the most common causes being hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), perinatal stroke and intracranial haemorrhage. Due to the frequency of these conditions and the relative excitability of the newborn brain, the neonatal period, in particular the first week of life, is the most vulnerable period for the development of seizures.
·
The incidence of neonatal seizures varies
between 1 to 5 cases per 1000 live births, with significantly higher rates in
premature infants ranging from 55 to 95 per 1000 live births.
