Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) – Market Outlook, Epidemiology, Competitive Landscape, and Market Forecast Report – 2023 To 2033
Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a range of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by diverse clinical manifestations and two main underlying neuropathological profiles. Within FTD, there are typically three distinct clinical syndromes: behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA), and nonfluent variant primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA). Furthermore, FTD often exhibits clinical and neuropathological overlaps with three other neurodegenerative conditions: corticobasal syndrome (CBS), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). These syndromes can be associated with different underlying neuropathological diagnoses collectively termed frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD). The most prevalent forms of FTD are as follows:
1.
Frontal variant: This type primarily impacts
behavior and personality.
2.
Primary progressive aphasia: This category
involves communication difficulties and has two subtypes:
·
Progressive nonfluent aphasia, which impairs
speech abilities.
·
Semantic dementia, which hampers language
comprehension and usage.
Up to 50%
of FTD cases with autosomal-dominant inheritance have a family history of FTD.
Clinical diagnoses include behavioral variant FTD (bvFTD), primary progressive
aphasia (PPA) affecting language, and disorders primarily affecting movements,
such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal degeneration
(CBD). The US FDA has not approved any drug to treat frontotemporal dementia.
·
The annual prevalence of FTD varies from 18 to
25 cases per 100,000 individuals in the USA. FTD ranks as the second most
common form of dementia among people under 65, and its prevalence is expected
to increase with the aging population.
