Cryptococcosis – Market Outlook, Epidemiology, Competitive Landscape, and Market Forecast Report – 2023 To 2033

Cryptococcosis, an infectious disease caused by pathogenic yeasts of the genus Cryptococcus, is found worldwide. The primary culprits responsible for human illness are Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii. Among these, C. neoformans serotype A strains make up about 95% of infections, while the remaining 4-5% are attributed to C. neoformans serotype D and C. gattii serotype B/C. The transmission of this infection typically happens through contact with pigeon droppings, unwashed raw fruit, or exposure to infected individuals. Those with weakened immune systems, like those with HIV, face an elevated risk of contracting this disease. Cryptococcus mainly establishes clinical symptoms in the lungs and central nervous system (CNS). Nevertheless, it can also affect other body parts such as the skin, prostate, eyes, bones, and joints. In HIV-positive individuals, this infection typically manifests as subacute meningitis or meningoencephalitis. It is characterized by symptoms like fever, malaise, and headaches, often emerging around two weeks after infection. While classic meningeal indicators such as neck stiffness and photophobia are seen in only a quarter to a third of patients, encephalopathic symptoms like lethargy, altered mental state, personality changes, and memory loss may occur, often due to increased intracranial pressure.

·       The prevalence of cryptococcosis has been estimated to range from 2-10% in individuals with HIV infection in the USA and Europe.
