Stargardt Disease – Market Outlook, Epidemiology, Competitive Landscape, and Market Forecast Report – 2023 To 2033
Macular dystrophy comprises a set of hereditary disorders characterized by retinal irregularities located between the temporal vascular arcades. Stargardt disease (STGD1) is the most frequent cause of juvenile macular dystrophy among these. It follows an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern, primarily linked to mutations in the adenosine triphosphate binding cassette transporter 4 (ABCR 4) gene. This genetic anomaly results in the accumulation of lipofuscin, a metabolic waste product, within the retina. The disease exhibits substantial heterogeneity in clinical manifestations, including variations in age of onset and progression rate. Patients experience a gradual decline in vision, usually commencing in their first or second decades of life. Presently, no approved treatments prevent or reverse visual deterioration in individuals with STGD1. Medical advice for patients centers on photoprotection to slow the disease's progression and provide low-vision aids for those with compromised visual fields. As the disease advances, many patients eventually reach legal blindness due to the loss of central vision, although peripheral vision often remains intact. The prognosis is highly variable and heavily contingent on the age of disease onset. Those with early onset typically face unfavorable outcomes, with a rapid decline in visual acuity, progressive retinal degeneration, and the potential development of profound chorioretinal atrophy. Consequently, individuals with this phenotype experience a severe form of the disease with a grim prognosis. In contrast, rapid-onset chorioretinopathy (ROC) represents a distinct sub-phenotype marked by swift disease progression. On the other hand, patients with late-onset disease typically maintain good visual acuity even into their later years. Fortunately, this condition does not significantly affect general health or life expectancy.
