Insufficient vitamin A also leads to dryness and breakdown of the mucosal membranes in the intestines and lungs, along with compromised immune function, resulting in frequent infections and anemia caused by chronic inflammation. The recommended treatment for vitamin A deficiency is vitamin A supplementation. The prognosis of vitamin A deficiency depends on the severity of the disease when treatment is initiated. Severe vitamin A deficiency may lead to irreversible vision loss or blindness, heightened susceptibility to infections, and impaired immune function, significantly increasing mortality rates.
