Uterine leiomyomas, commonly referred to as fibroids or myomas, are noncancerous tumors primarily affecting women of reproductive age. Tumors arise from the smooth muscle cells of the uterus, specifically the myometrium. While the exact cause of uterine fibroids is not fully understood, it has been suggested that ovarian hormones may play a crucial role in their development. Increasing age and African descent are the primary risk factors associated with the development of fibroids.
