Splenomegaly is a condition characterized by an enlarged spleen. The "gold-standard" definition of splenomegaly is measuring the spleen's weight, as a normal adult spleen weighs between 50-250 grams, and this decreases with age. The most common physical symptom of splenomegaly is vague abdominal discomfort, such as pain in the left upper abdomen or referred pain in the left shoulder. Patients with splenomegaly of any cause are at an increased risk of splenic rupture, and extra care must be taken to keep the patient safe from abdominal trauma.
